While wind and solar are our cheapest clean sources of power their intermittency creates a massive vulnerability in the system which LDES is designed to solve.
Dorset
The South Dorset project, located near Portland, is positioned as the sole material-scale hydrogen storage node in Southern England, a region forecast to become the UK’s largest hydrogen demand area.
With an envisioned maximum annual capacity of up to 30 TWh, this facility is critical for extending the national Project Union pipeline into the South, acting as an essential Hydrogen Battery for integrating local green hydrogen production, supporting the Solent Cluster, and enabling the decarbonisation of major UK ports and airports (like LHR and LGW).
East Yorkshire
East Yorkshire is equally strategic, aiming for an initial annual capacity of around 7 TWh, with expansion plans to match the Dorset scale.
This location is vital for serving the heavy industrial users in the Humber and Teesside clusters (the UK’s largest CO2) emitting region), placing it firmly within the government’s East Coast Cluster priority.
The project’s planned connection to the Project Union network by Q4 2032/Q1 2033 is a critical timeline, as it will unlock crucial H2P (Hydrogen to Power) capability at major power stations, providing the low-carbon, dispatchable electricity needed to ensure stability and resilience alongside intermittent renewables
